Topiary pairs can be used on either side of pathways, entries, or driveways. A single topiary can be used as a centerpiece in a bed or as a spectacular end to a pathway. You can surround it with a low geometric hedge or a wall to give an air of elegance to your landscape. You can also center it in a beautiful fountain of flowers. An animal topiary sitting next to a garden bench can create a special setting for children and family. They are also a perfect choice for urns and pots.

Due to the fact that topiaries take years to shape and grow, they can be a bit of an investment. You will want to pick one that will prosper where you choose to put it. Full sun topiaries are very often shaped from Arborvitaes, junipers, and ligustrums. Dwarf Alberta spruce can handle full sun, but can still prosper with just morning sun. Boxwood, ivy, and yew topiaries are at their best in shade.

Ready-made topiaries can be purchased and can be kept at their current shape and height. In order to keep them looking at their best, they need to be maintained regularly. They must be pruned on a regular basis or they will go back to being shrubs. Dwarf Alberta spruce only need to be cut every few months. Ligustrum, on the other hand, will need to be trimmed every month during the growing season. The ideal pruning tool for most topiaries is a sharp pair of scissors. Ligustrum, holly, and loropetalum will require hand pruners. Shears, especially electric shears, should be used with great caution. Prune wayward branches back to about an inch or less of the original cuts. Remember, evergreens should not be cut back into the old dead wood as they won't regenerate and you will be left with big hole and a lot of regret. Broad-leafed topiaries are much more forgiving.

You can try making topiaries yourself. The easiest way to do this is to tree form a shrub by taking out lower branches and leaving a canopy of leaves. These can be left in a more natural shape or formed into a mushroom. The cloud form is also an easy method for the home gardener. If you don't feel sure of yourself, search the internet for ‘A Man Named Pearl' and be inspired.

Trim, Taper & Train Your Topiary

The art of topiary gardening has been cultivated for both its practical and aesthetic benefits. Although Europeans have used this method of training and growing plants for centuries, topiaries became popular in the United States as a way to architecturally transform urban homes and gardens.

The most common topiary forms include hedge, espalier, sculptural, and standard. The espalier, a very familiar artistic form, is a plant. This plant is grown flat against a wall, fence building, or trellis. Fruit trees make great espaliers, as they are both pretty and productive in leaf and flower. Espaliers can be pruned and cultivated to different designs such as candelabras, fan shapes, fountains, diamonds, and triangles. It takes many years of shaping and growing to complete a complex pattern. From an architectural point of view, espaliers are quite useful in hiding a utility area or creating a screen of privacy without closing off the garden from air and light.

Hedges, another very familiar topiary form, are rows of trees or shrubs that are spaced evenly into a line and pruned so that they are wider at the base than at the top. Traditionally, hedges give a formal look. However, for a natural landscape, they can be easily pruned into forms that resemble shapes seen in the nature.

If you decide to tackle your own topiary project, the best advice is to start out with small, tight-growing plants. Be sure to plant them in a place where they are surrounded by light. In order to attain the look you want, shear them often when they in the process of growing; this will make sure that you have a tight-knit, closely grown effect.
