Federal Way, WA Tidbits

Federal Way, Washington is bordered on the south by Pierce County, on the west by Puget Sound, and is located in the southwestern corner of King County. Although the community has experience massive development and growth in recent years, it was a rural community for much of its early history.

Native Indians who lived next to the Green and White Rivers used the region for seasonal campgrounds, although there weren't any Indian settlements in what is currently known as Federal Way. They caught clams during clamming season and smoked them for preservation for transportation. In 1792, Captain George Vancouver explored the region and many native Indians arrived on the shore to greet him.

As early as 1824, explorers from the HBC (Hudson's Bay Company) might have arrived in the region. Next to a south/north Indian trail they established a small trading post in 1840. Throughout the history of federal Way, this trail would have a long legacy.

A survey a survey was conducted for a road to be constructed between Fort Bellingham and Fort Steilacoom during the early 1850's. This was called Military Road because it was built for use by the military. The road was completed between Seattle and Pierce County by 1860.

Numerous settlers next to south Puget Sound selected claims for land claims close to Tacoma or Seattle at that time. The first settlers didn't move to the general Federal Way region until 1871. Other settlers started relocating close and the first school was established close to Star Lake by 1880. Small communities including Adelaide and Buenna established their own schools. A man named Taylor Webb relocated to the location where the Sea Tac Mall is currently located in 1890. That region is called Webb Center by some people.

In this rural, remote location, the majority of families had small farms. On small lakes, some sawmills were constructed. However, for many years the region remained mainly undeveloped. A man named Charles Betts opened the first store at Stone's Landing in 1904.

At the landing a dock collapsed in 1906, which killed 13 people. Mr. Betts suggested that the community be renamed to Redondo because he was worried about the stigma of this disaster. Some people were in hopes that the region would become a destination for recreation, much the same as California's Redondo Beach. A skating rink, dance hall, and bowling alley were constructed during the next decade.

There was some talk that started about a new highway that run along the whole western coast of the US after the automobile started to become popular. In 1915, building this new highway was started and federal funds were received to pave the road between Tacoma and Seattle in 1925. This new highway became US 99, and much of it ran parallel to or overlay Military Road. In 1928, the section between Tacoma and Seattle opened officially.

There were eight small school districts in the region by this time. It was determined that they would all be consolidated into one school district in 1929. The first elementary school that was constructed in this new district was named the Federal Way School, which was the same name as the school district.

Although development was hindered by the Great Depression, followed by WW II, the community now had a major thoroughfare. Until after the war, the region remained rural other than restaurants and gas stations. The first major business in Federal Way was Marckx's Farm Store, which opened in 1945, next to highway 99. However, soon others would follow.

The predecessor to the Chamber of Commerce in Federal, known as the Federal Way Commercial Club was established in 1946. The community had its own newspaper, called the Greater Federal Way News some years later.

Highway 99 was being traveled by travelers up and down the coast in addition to the residents of King County by the 1950's. Restaurants such as Rocky's Drive In, Les's In and Out hamburgers, and Rose's Hi-Way Inn provided the hungry some good hot meals. For those who were tired, there were temporary stopovers in the form of many different motels.

The Federal Way Shopping Center opened in 1955. This shopping center became the home of a collection of historical artifacts and old cabins called the Old Line Historic park, the European reproductions of the Old World Square, and many different amusement rides of Santafair. For this venture, 160 extra acres were purchased in 1961. Around the perimeter, a narrow gauge railroad was constructed to be used as a ride. However, the owners started to have legal problems. They were charged with 29 counts of conspiracy and fraud and filed bankruptcy, although, eventually, they were cleared of all charges.

One mile east of Highway 99, Interstate 5 opened in 1962. More development in the community was the result. In 1964, the Century City complex was opened and in 1965, the Twin Lakes housing development started selling houses. New schools opened and the Weyerhaeuser corporation started construction on its corporate headquarters in Federal Way in 1968.

Although it was voted down overwhelmingly, in 1971, an attempt to incorporate as a city was made. Without any success, attempts were also made in 1981 and 1985.

The Federal Way Shopping Center was bought by the Teratron Company. However, the shopping center was in need of much repair. In 1975, the Sea Tac Shopping Mall opened, which was a much needed shot-in-the-arm for the business community. During the first week it opened, almost 20,000 people visited the new mall. Across the street, the SeaTac Village Shopping Center opened the following year.

The year 1990 finally brought the incorporation of Federal Way. The bowling complex at Sportsworld Lanes held the official act of incorporation. Also in 1990, at the new Weyerhaeuser Aquatics center, Federal Way received recognition from around the world when the Goodwill Games diving and swimming events were held.
